With the funding available to your school from the SB1131 Physical Education Grant, you have the opportunity to significantly impact the health and fitness of your students, now and well into the future, without affecting your current budget. As you know, this bill allocates $19 per student to every school in the LAUSD (a minimum of $2,500 per school) specifically for physical education curriculum, professional development and equipment. The choice of many LAUSD schools has been the easy-to-implement, district-approved Sport For All program.

As an elementary school department chair and curriculum specialist, I recognize the time constraints for principals and teachers. Based on my experience and training, I recommend the affordable and effective Sport For All programs for your physical activity investment. Sport For All is a turnkey program of fun, age-appropriate curriculum, professional development that is well-suited for all levels of physical education/activity training, and equipment that is specifically selected for the Sport For All activities. The lessons are designed based on the National Standards for Physical Education and developmentally appropriate for students at various stages of maturation.

While teaching my students to be physically active, I found the cards easy to use and convenient.  With the ability to simply remove a lesson card from the three ring binder, I could quickly see what equipment was needed and show the students the colorful picture, so that they could quickly understand the activity.  The extensions were great when I needed an extra challenge for a student.  The cards are so easy to use, that my substitute teachers were able to keep the kids progressing without missing a beat. There are even tips on what I could do to help my students improve!

For your convenience, I have also included on this website responses to the Los Angeles Unified School District School-Site Plan for Use of Funds, which you can use to apply for the SB 1131 funds. Remember that all applications must be submitted to your Local District Director of Support Services by October 19th. Don’t wait, or you may jeopardize these funds for your school.
